Meta Quest 3 vs Meta Quest 2: Sales comparison

Meta Quest 3 vs Meta Quest 2 in Q1 2024

Interestingly, both devices are still popular, but the Quest 3 seems to be the more preferred choice. In Q1 2023, the Meta Quest 2 sold approximately 520802 units, generating an estimated revenue of $216.13 million by ARInsider, which derived this calculation from the official financial results for the first quarter. Using the same method for Q1 2024 estimated that Quest 2 sold approximately 310781 units, while Quest 3 sold approximately 320583 units. Quest 3's Q1 revenue is estimated at $176 million, while Quest 2's revenue could be $83.6 million.

Quest 3's Q1 revenues are estimated at $176 million, while Quest 2's revenue could be $83.6 million.

Both devices sold a similar number of units, but revenue from the Quest 3 goggles is significantly higher, as its price is almost double that of the Quest 2.

We also know that Meta is planning to release new headset, likely to be called the Meta Quest 3s, which will replace the Quest 2 goggles. It will be a cheaper version of the Quest 3, retaining key features such as the new XR2 Gen2 chipset, colour passthrough cameras and new controllers. However, features such as 'pancake' optics (pancake lenses), higher resolution screens and a depth sensor will remain exclusive to the Quest 3.

It is interesting to note that Meta wants to place the Quest 3s in a similar price range to the Quest 2. Reports suggest two potential prices: either $200 or $300 (in Euro terms this would translate to around €249 and €349) with the latter option being more likely. Meta seems to be moving quickly on this plan - unofficial sources indicate that Meta is aiming to complete Quest 2 sales in Europe by the end of June and in the US by September.

Watching how the relationship between Quest 3s and Quest 2 develops in terms of sales history could be quite interesting, especially given the number of titles exclusive to Quest 3, which will also be available on Quest 3s thanks to the latest chipset. This means that there are now more games on the Quest platform than ever and the same goes for the general interest in the VR/AR industry, so there is a possibility that the Quest 3s goggles will sell comparably well to the Quest 2.

How many Quest 3 goggles have sold? How do their sales compare to the Quest 2? A comparison of sales of both goggles in the first quarter since launch and beyond

It has now been a year since the Quest 3 was officially announced and around nine months since its release. This headset is the successor to the hugely successful Meta Quest 2, which has sold around 20 million copies since its debut in 2020. The Quest 3 costs twice as much as the Quest 2 and, although it offers features to justify this price, it would appear that the Quest 3 has sold fewer units than the Quest 2 this year.

But is this really the case? Meta doesn't release official sales figures for its goggles unless one of their products is a spectacular success like the 20 million units sold of the Quest 2. However, there are curious people who reach for more creative methods to estimate the number of devices sold.

One way to estimate the minimum number of Quest 3 goggles in circulation is to see how many people have played the 'First Encounters' Mixed Reality game by Meta, pre-installed on each set of goggles.

Meta Quest 3 Shipment

We can be sure that the number of people who have launched the game is the minimum number of Quest 3 goggles that are in circulation. However, it is logical to assume that the actual number of goggles is higher, as not everyone who buys the goggles will launch the game. Additionally, companies can purchase multiple goggles without running the game on each one.

According to an article from VGChartz, Quest 2 sold one million copies in the first quarter after its release. In comparison, ARInsider article, based on data from the first quarter financial results conference call, shows that Quest 3 sold around 761,384 units in the first quarter since its launch. As already mentioned, another interesting measure of Quest 3 sales is the number of First Encounters players. All the associated data can be seen below:

  • 2 January (4 months after the release of Quest 3) - 404193 players
  • 11 February (5 months after the release of Quest 3) - 609649 players
  • 2 March (6 months after the release of Quest 3) - 695762 players
  • 9 March (6 months after the release of Quest 3) - 719137 players
  • 8 April (7 months after the release of Quest 3) - 811666 players
  • 24 April (7.5 months after the release of Quest 3) - 850354 players
  • 9 May (8 months after the release of Quest 3) - 887335 players
  • 3 June (9 months after the release of Quest 3) - 944231 players
  • 7 June (9 months after the release of Quest 3) - 952766 players

How many Quest 3 goggles have sold?

Quest 3 has probably sold in numbers of approximately 1,250,000 units until June 2024. Based on data from ARInsider, Meta sold approximately 320,583 Quest 3 units in first quarter of 2024. This brings the total number to around 1,080,000 units by the end of March. Comparing this with the number of First Encounters players, we can see that around 75% people who bought the goggles have launched the game. From this we can conclude that around 200,000 Quest 3 units have been sold in the last two months, bringing the total number to around 1,250,000 Quest 3 units.
